A brief history of how we became who and what we are today:
In 1882 George Henry Cakebread and Arthur Edward Robey founded the business which is now known today as Cakebread's, formerly Cakebread Robey plc.
The business grew steadily until, in 1918, it floated on the London Stock Exchange as a listed company.
Since that time, there have been considerable changes within both the company and the industry but our commitment to customer service and the consistency of supplying high quality products remains the same today as in the days of the original family business.
Over time the company has acquired and absorbed some old established names of the merchant trade as well as those of a more modern era.
These include; Ridley & Hooper - Established in 1750, Folkard-Bolding - Established in 1822, Clark Hunt - Established in 1828, Arthur Collar - Registered in 1913, J H Tripp - Founded after the First World War, Dixon Scott, Keith Building Services, D & T Holmes, A Olby & Son, and W P Winter.
Those past acquisitions have greatly strengthened the character of the company. You may notice that a number of these names remain as trading branches.
The recessions of the early nineties resulted in a rationalisation within the company, this has resulted in the current structure - a structure suited to progress within the 21st century.
In August 2001 Cakebread's, formerly Cakebread Robey plc, were acquired on behalf of Jewson Limited, by Saint-Gobain Building Distribution UK. For administrative purposes the company has been attached to the Graham South-East Plumbing & Heating Division (sub-division of Jewson). The combination of expertise and resources serve to further strengthen the company whilst retaining the independence and character refined over the last 120 years.
Cakebread's look forward confidently to the future maintaining continued commitment to service and products for the customers we serve.

Cakebread's will continue to supply principally light-side materials, to the same high standards, to both retail and trade customers from their five trading branches located within the South East of England and East Anglia. These retain separate trading names as follows:
Cakebread's, based at Enfield and Penge, also formerly known as CS Contracts, primarily provide a specialist service in the contract supply of sanitaryware to the housing development and commercial sectors. As a result of close cooperation both branches enjoy the advantage of warehouse and distribution facilities both north and south of the River Thames. In addition to its primary specialisation, Enfield branch provides a light-side builders merchant incorporating a specialist service in the supply of chemical waste & laboratory fittings for hospitals, research companies and schools.
Keith Building Services, formerly trading at Enfield under its own name, has been incorporated under the Cakebread's trading name with effect from January 2002.
CR Electrical, based at Enfield, provides a comprehensive service supplying the Electrical trade and are distributors for Belling spares.
D & T Holmes, based at Histon, Cambridgeshire, formerly a family business, continues to offer that successful family approach to service as a specialist in the supply of plumbing and heating goods to the trade.
Folkard-Bolding, based at Acton, provides a specialist service in the contract supply of commercial sanitaryware and chemical waste & laboratory fittings to hospitals, schools, prisons and public buildings.
Acton and Canterbury (not a trading branch) form the basis of the companys contract Estimating service.
